More Fishing Tackle Shops and Bait Shops in Devon

This has to be one of the most emotive subjects in fishing, coarse or Sea. Anglers that have fished with maggots and casters all their life will never accept that the new prepared and SMARTBaiT's can be as effective. Anglers that caught specimen Carp on luncheon meat swear that it is better than boilies. I said the same thing in sea fishing as here, a hungry fish will eat what it can find. A well presented bait will catch fish providing that the fish are around. There are of course many techniques that the coarse angler likes to use in order to attract fish to their swim, some of which your local fishery may not allow so always check before using your chosen method. One thing I will add however, even though Tackle Frenzy has not yet worked out how to send maggots by post is that I have never failed to catch something when using maggots.

Maggots

Every float anglers favourite, the trusty maggot has been catching fish since maggots began. They wriggle well and the fish cannot resist. Is there a down side? Maybe. The maggot is small enough for a stickleback to eat so smaller less aware fish tend to get you bait before that specimen Roach can get to it. Ideal bait for the Match angler looking for as many fish as they can catch and ideal bait for the newcomer looking to catch fish. You should always catch something with a maggot. They are available as white, red, pink, mixed or Pinkies which are smaller and Perch love them in 2's and 3's on your hook!

Casters

The catalyst form of a maggot is the caster. These are better for fish such as Bream and Chub if fished 2 to a hook. be careful when hooking these as they are easily split and rendered useless as bait. A delicate touch is required with these but they will pay dividends for larger fish. Casters are also quite good as fish attractors in your swim as they will not bury themselves as maggots do.

Sweetcorn & Seed Baits

Sweetcorn can be a killer bait for large Roach, Bream even Tench and will resist the attentions of the smaller fish. Hemp and tares are also ideal bait if seeking that larger fish are are usually more effective when feeder fishing than float fishing as the bottom feeders will route this type of bait out more so than small shoaling fish.

Boilies

The favoured bait of the Carp angler / specimen hunter. These are basically past balls boiled to provide texture and 'castability'. They are usually flavoured with flavours such as banana, curry, strawberry, vanilla or any combination that you wish to try. I saw a fishing program where the host fished for Carp using strawberries, and caught loads!

SMARTBaiT's

Advanced fishing if the rhetoric is to be believed. Hook baits and ground baits designed to work hand in hand. I can see the sense in this and look forward to trying this method alongside the traditional maggot. Watch this space for our reports on using SMARTBaiT but if the reports are true and I speak extensively to SMARTBaiT and I am sure that they are - look out fish!

Ground Baits

These are used as both attractants and encouragement for the fish to feed. Used sensibly ground bait is an ideal way to get the fish interested in your swim and also to keep them feeding once they have started. \there are various mixes available from the humble breadcrumb to highly scientific Method mixes used by the specialist anglers. Unfortunately in these competitive times ground bait has been over used and many fisheries do not allow it to be used at certain times of the year. Check your local fishery first before using ground bait.
